August is winding down and with the dawn of September we’ll gradually welcome in cooler temperatures, the inevitable changing shades of the outdoors and that cosy familiar sense of nesting into the interior of our homes again. With the changes in the natural world come the changes in our space, these don’t need to be wholesale nor simply for the sake of a season’s handover. However, a true homely home, we think, reflects nicely what’s happening outside the window, too. Which is why we’ve pieced together this run down of ideas and inspirations to help you achieve lovely Autumn home decor this year.

Throw Your Ideas Down, Literally.

Fringed dark grey and silver throwThrows. Is there honestly anything cosier? The answer is; probably only a box of puppies or your Gran’s knitted jumper. A throw is a close bronze finish to both of those of course, but without doubt the humble throw will absolutely do the trick and some! We think there’s truly an ideal throw for any modern interior, and they don’t rely heavily on one particular style of home, they’re versatile. What’s more is that these soft inviting garments-come-decor are entirely well suited as Autumn home decor.

See, the benefits of using a throw (or multiple throws) work on many levels. In short, they add a lovely softer texture to a room whilst also breaking up montone furnishings/surroundings. A warming and comforting visual aid as well as literally a wrap around comforter, certainly we see them used in many a living room interior as well as in bedrooms and hallways. Whether artfully draped over an armchair, end of a bed or neatly folded into a nook or a book shelf there’s plenty of styling options. Through Inside Out Living you’re more than well served for throws. There’s pleated and fringed options whilst all are incredibly soft and come in a fine selection of contemporary and stylish colours such as grey, blush, mustard ochre and duck egg blue. To achieve optimal autumnal vibes – head for the mustard or two tone grey.

Bringing The Outside In.

This Autumn home decor trend clearly isn’t specific to just autumnal decorating, but it certainly has special relevance for this transitional season. What better way to mark the occasion where gorgeous ambers, burnt tangerines and earthy hues transform our tree filled landscape than to represent some of these natural world colours quite literally in the home. So why not carefully and responsibly take a cutting from a typical September-November sprig or branch and place in a tall vase. We think, if able to get your hands on some, placing two or three slim crab apple branches complete with fruit will work autumnal wonders in any modern interior. Add water and watch the fruit transition over the weeks from green through to the deep red that so speaks to this upcoming time of year. In lieu of this particular foliage choice, get resourceful – pretty much any local branch/sprig responsibly sourced will work nicely. The wonderful thing about autumnal colours, rich and earthy in nature, is they tend to be very compatible with most existing decor.

Pumpkins! This wouldn’t be a worthy Autumn home decor idea run down without mentioning the emblematic October fruit. Wait a second – fruit!? That’s right, pumpkin is a fruit, not a vegetable! For the same reason tomato is also a fruit, it is seed bearing – you’re welcome, you can use that in your next pub quiz. This peculiar bulbous squash variant makes an appearance at this time of year across many countries and cultures, and not only in a novel traditional sense – nowadays they’re an outright modern interior decorative item. The wonderful thing about pumpkins, or their smaller siblings ‘gourds’, is the endless species to choose from; each giving differing tones, textures and sizes. Our favourite Autumn home decor ideas that use pumpkins involve strategically placing smaller versions around the home – in a central coffee table bowl perhaps, or in a large glass jar or vase and even just placed amongst the proceedings of a display unit, mantelpiece or any display-ready living room interior furniture.

Give Your Porch Some Seasonal Love.

The Rural Hall Bench Slate GreyEntryways, porches, hallways and entry corridors can so often fall into the category of the unloved or sidelined area in the home, and it makes sense. These largely utility areas are for passing through and we tend not to pay close attention to how they are configured. However, why not use any autumn home decor switch ups planned to reinvigorate this space too? Afterall, it’s the first port of call when entering the home and during these chillier months the area for changing in and out of different footwear and layers, it makes sense to add a sense of comfort and ease to the experience.

Now, it doesn’t need to be at the level of effort or detail as your living room interior, simply a rejig and re-sort could even do the trick. We’re of the feeling that to add optimal autumnal feels a hung wreath with locally collected branches and leaves can nicely benefit an entryway at this time of year. Or a tall vessel with long branches placed into the corner will add visual texture to the room. Space allowing – a stylish bench will suit the scenario all too well, providing seating for shoes on-off moments. Rustic benches tend to be a popular option and suit many modern interior styles, these too have a certain relevance to autumnal styles, but will work just as well year round.

Wicker.

Hampstead Storage Baskets Split Kubu Rattan Natural/Grey Set of 3Something we’ve long been admirers of is wicker furniture. We’re of course much better versed in the virtues of wicker primarily designed for the outside of our homes. Attractive synthetic rattan wicker makes up the most of our fabulous garden furniture options, but we’re also of the feeling it slots into the conservatory just as well, and the conservatory is a place that is very well suited for those cosy September/October afternoons. Perfect for absorbing the glorious and rich shades of the season but from the comfort of an indoors plush sofa set.

Traditional wicker is a look that resonates especially nicely with Autumn home decor, the earthy tones and natural fibres are something which will accent other existing furnishings nicely and bring a certain rustic warmth into the home, feelings always associated with this time of year. We’re besotted with these wicker baskets, perfect for storage but also achieving a stylish look by themselves with a memorable two tone painted bottom, perfect for any modern interior, this time of year and beyond.

Oak Finishes.

The Rural Extending Oak Dining Table Set – Smokey Oak (1.5m)We’re all for oak wood furniture and this idea is as simple as making the most of any oak wood furnishings you already possess – or if needed upgrading articles to the versatile and ever fashionable oak wood options.

Oak speaks to autumnal shades especially well, in its purest natural colour a solid oak table or coffee table will always help to underline the earthy forest hues associated with this time of year. To really underline the modern interior seasonal switch you could fill a bowl placed centrally in the table with acorns or chestnut conkers. Foraged nuts placed into a bowl will also extend nicely into the winter months, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves and wish away this lovely time of year!

And what a wonderful time of year it is, we’ll certainly be relishing the opportunity for leaf strewn walks, revelling the crisp air and admiring the moody evening skies in these coming months. Perhaps you’re all for autumn too? If so, please feel free to share your Autumn home decor with us on Instagram, facebook or pinterest. If we love what we see we will often reshare. 😍  🍂
