What Is Reactive Glaze?

Simply put, reactive glaze is a broad term for the unique finishes resulting from a non-formulaic firing in the kiln. This means that because of the higher heat boiling process, it cannot be predicted how the finish will end up looking. Therefore, no two pieces of reactive glaze dinnerware are identical. Whether due to oxidisation or chemical reaction during the process, the finish is notable for its completely spontaneous visual outcome and organic aesthetics.

It’s these unique qualities that have caused reactive glaze dinnerware to become a growing trend in tableware and for stoneware home accessories.

Why Choose Reactive Glaze Dinnerware?

To understand why somebody might opt for a reactive glaze dinner set it’s perhaps important to understand the alternatives:

  • Standard simple glazes are considered to be those that are a complete all round covering of the ceramic piece in question. Whether matte, opaque, or translucent, it’s often the case that these pieces behave predictably during firing and block colour ceramics are the outcome.
  • Luster glaze, on the other hand, is a glaze that is technically applied after firing, so the ceramic ends up with interesting sheens and colourations that glint in different light, such as tonal metallics and pearl.
  • Selenium glaze refers to the process of adding the nutrient selenium to the firing process and typically results in a dark red colour with mottled, distinct deep patterning.

Generally speaking, stoneware dinner plates (or sets of ceramic plates and bowls), tend to be finished using the standard glaze, which dominates the market. So put simply; reactive glaze dinnerware offers a chic variation from the status quo of dining ceramics.

Endlessly interesting unique markings steal the show

So, now we know that each piece finished with a reactive glaze showcases a completely unique appearance, with interesting quirks and nuances. Which is why reactive glaze dinnerware has re-established itself in the world of crockery; owning beautifully produced and completely individual stoneware dinner plates and bowls holds huge appeal. Typically, features like dimples, unevenness to the touch, aesthetic cracking and blemishes all add to the storied appeal. Certainly a lovely rustic and earthy look can be the outcome for some ceramics with this defining finish and our ranges offer these wonderful features. Of course, this organic aesthetic is the key factor that sets this type of stoneware apart but it’s also worth mentioning some practicalities; it is of course safe to use with all foods. It’s also safe to use at different temperatures, including with microwaves. That said, we don’t recommend placing these directly into an oven, so to avoid compromising the construction.
