The dining room is the social hub of the home, meaning it deserves a vibrant personality to match. In our experience one of the best ways to add a bit of charisma to the space is mix and match dining chairs! Gone are the days where dining sets need to match. We’ve ensured our dining chairs can be purchased individually, giving you the freedom to style your dining space exactly as you please. Not sure where to get started? These are just a few of our favourite mixing and matching ideas:

Mix Textures

Pine and leather? Fabric and rattan? Trust us, it works. It might seem a little unconventional, however incorporating chairs with different textures is a great way to add an extra dimension to your living space. When you mix and match dining chairs, you want the mismatch to look deliberate, and blending textures shows your design intention. Why not add a curious combination such as the upholstered Gaudi dining chair alongside the leather Montana chair. The contrast creates a unique statement that adds flair and personality.

Incorporate Benches

When thinking about how to mix and match dining chairs, don’t be afraid to play around with shape and height. Adding a dining bench amongst your chairs is a great way to add another element and create a point of interest. A dining bench is a particularly wonderful addition if you’re hoping to create a more relaxed and informal dining setting. The Modern Farmhouse dining bench features a beautifully rustic pine finish that’s complemented by a chunky frame design. For more modern decor schemes, the Urban dining bench benefits from a lacquered pine finish and contrasting gun metal grey powder coated frames.

Balance Light & Heavy Chairs

Pairing a light and airy chair, such as the Dalby dining chair, with a heavier chair such as the Burnham Dining Chair is the perfect way to create a sense of balance. These two chairs are somewhat similar in style but offset with their different weights and textures, bringing character into the space without looking too heavy or indeed too light and airy. Our top tip for incorporating mix and match dining chairs in this way is to put heavier chairs at the head of the table. If the chairs you put at the head are shorter than the ones at the side, the arrangement will look slightly off.

Bring The Old In With The New

Why choose between traditional and modern decor when you can have both? Mixed dining chairs allow you to incorporate a sense of both the traditional and the modern into your home, without it looking out of place. One of the easiest ways to achieve this look is to pair a neutral table, such as the Bergen dining table, with mix and match dining chairs of different designs. The traditional Bergen arm chairs look fantastic when paired with our Ash Dining Chair to create a balance of height, texture and style whilst sharing joint elements- in this case the natural wood.

Contrast Colours

Sometimes a slight contrast of colour is all you need to bring another layer of character into the room. That’s why one of the most effective uses of purposely mismatched dining chairs is choosing the same style chair, just in two different colours. There’s plenty of freedom to play around with style and colour in this regard. For example, one of our favourite combinations is the Selwood dining chair in denim and linen. The striking denim design is balanced out perfectly by the contrasting natural linen colour, creating a coherent yet unique look.

Ultimately, there are no limits on how to mix and match dining chairs – the whole point is that you have the freedom to design your living space exactly as you like.
