This year we are one of the proud suppliers of ITV’s Love Your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh, which kicked off last night with a heartwarming episode.

Alan and the team were in Fareham, in Hampshire, to surprise 90 year old Betty who has spent her life helping others. Over the years she has raised thousands of pounds for various causes, a mission she has continued even after being diagnosed with macular degeneration 25 years ago.

Unfortunately Betty’s failing eyesight means daily life is increasingly challenging for her and her concrete, multi-level garden is too dangerous for her to use.

As a thank you for everything she has done Betty’s friends contacted the Love Your Garden Team asking them to help transform her garden into something she can use and get enjoyment from once more.

The episode kicked off with a very surprised Betty opening her front door to Alan and the crew. Her warmth and energy came across immediately; as she welcomed Alan with open arms saying that seeing him had ‘made her day’.

The existing garden consisted of a drab and grey obstacle course of multi-level concrete terraced patios. But what is her dream garden? A garden for all the senses, a garden with bright colours, lovely smells and sounds and one that she could easily navigate around.

Alan and his team set about with the transformation, taking their inspiration from the beautiful Italian garden at West Green House in Hampshire. They were hoping to channel some of that garden’s key features: symmetrical planting, central walkways, focal features such as fountains and sculptures, to name a few.

The transformation outcome? A bright and dramatic two tiered sensory garden consisting of a sunken seating area, bespoke Pergola offering much needed shade, graded walkway with handrails, brightly coloured flower beds with a scattering of sculptures, that all important water feature, a beautiful white and green summerhouse flanked by rustic sleepers, raised flowerbeds and an artificial lawn, all picked for the low maintenance they require.

The garden makeover was a triumph. The contrasting white structures and greenery perfectly framed the new and beautiful features and assortment of bright plants. They created a truly sensory garden.

I challenge anyone to watch the episode without tearing up, particularly during the grand reveal at the end of the episode. Betty was left ‘gobsmacked’ and speechless, Alan was left holding back tears and we, the viewers, were left with a real sense of happiness, seeing this selfless lady so very happy with her new garden.

Roll on next week!
