If you don’t think your family is ready to go camping just yet, why not try camping in your garden to start. This way you’ll get an idea of whether the family is going to enjoy camping or not before wasting your time and money (and perhaps sanity 😅) if you had decided to go camping first. Whilst camping in your back garden, you will also have the luxury of being able to run back into the house if it starts raining or the little one isn’t enjoying it.

Just because you are camping in your garden, that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the normal camping experience, you just have the luxury of using your own bathroom and choosing when the weather is best.

Do a nature hunt

One of the first things you could consider doing on your family camping trip in the garden is a nature hunt. Why not put a list of things for your children to find and see how many they can get on this list within your garden, this could be anything from finding a caterpillar to looking out for an oddly-shaped twig, the list is endless and could include anything you might find in the garden. This is a great activity to do with young children that love to explore as this will keep them interested in camping in the garden as well as occupying them for a few moments.

Have a BBQ for tea

Not only is it so easy to cook food on your BBQ but doing this is a great way of making your camping trip as authentic as possible.

Make smores

Smores are a classic delicacy when camping, so why not make these when camping at home as well. All you need is a pack of marshmallows, chocolate and some digestive biscuits (preferably chocolate ones for an extra treat). Toast the marshmallows until soft and golden on the BBQ or fire and sandwich these in between two biscuits with some of the chocolate and you have yourself a more.

These have got to be the best part of camping, surely?

Make a campfire

This is perfect for toasting marshmallows on to make the smores mentioned earlier and can be used to cook your tea as well as keeping you warm when the temperature drops.

You could even look up some campfire songs to get the full camping experience at home.

Do some stargazing

What a better excuse to spend time outside than gazing up at the stars. Everybody’s lives are always so busy especially when you have a family to think about it’s so easy to forget the small things you can do that provide so much joy. This activity is great for all ages and is such a relaxing activity to do when camping, giving you the opportunity to give your mind a rest and unwind.

If this is something you would enjoy, you may also enjoy waking up early the following morning after camping in the garden to watch the sunrise and watch a new day arrive.

Play with shadows

Another fun garden camping idea to do with the whole family once the sun has gone down is to play with shadows in the tent, all you need for this is a torch and some great ideas to create from shadows.

Why not make this part of a game or take in turns creating different shadows whilst making up a story along the way using your shadows as the leading roles, this is great fun for both children as well as parents and is bound to create some great fun and memories on your camping trip in the garden.

Don’t forget, there are so many ideas out there that can make camping great fun whether this be in the back garden or in a campsite, but it is also important to remember to create your own fun and camping traditions for the ultimate experience and to establish memories to last a lifetime.
